Link Bait – Who are you casting to

One of the biggest brain teasers in SEO is figuring out a way to design and promote link bait for your website. Link bait can be anything you can provide on your site that will attract a bunch of links, diggs, bookmarks etc. Some forms of link bait include funny games, funny pictures, cool wigets, super resource articles, controversy, etc.

Have you ever found the fish before you cast the bait?

I remember one time I was visiting my Grand Parents who live up in Minnesota. One evening we took the boat out to a spot on a nearby lake where we could see a bunch of bluegill swimming around. I know this is kind of weak and probably viewed as cheating but that’s where we started casting :P . Pretty much every cast was a catch. You would think it would get boring, however being 8 years old it never did. After catching about 80 fish we headed back to the dock. What a great experience.

If you can track and create a list of sites that link to a certain group of related resources. Take a look at why they choose to externally link out to these resources. Could you, or do you already, offer something just as useful or better? If so, there’s a good chance they’ll also link to you now or eventually. If you run a financial website, take a look online for websites and blogs that make lists of favorite, top, best finance websites, tools, articles. Scout out the strongest websites or “biggest fish”. Study what bait to use. Brainstorm up some bait and start casting.
