35 Seo Tips, Design Guidelines

Today I figured I’d throw down some seo tips, ideas, questions; basically just a list of random thoughts on my mind. Some of these thing I have ironed out on this blog, some still need to be addressed.

NO duplicate title tags, Title Tags 8 words max Preferred.
NO duplicate meta information.
NO duplicate content.
Use H1 and H2 tags on all pages.
Make use of , and on choice key phrases, subtitles, etc.

It’s not bad to link out, I will avoid linking out to direct competition.

Target Keyphrases should make up no more than 6% of total word count

Each page should encourage the reader to visit another (good content)

External Homepage links should never pull more than 5% of your total traffic away

This also goes for advertising programs like adsense (always should be a users last option)

Shoot for four page views minimum per visitor.

Give reasons to re-visit, consider the use of “the daily picture, video, comic or joke”

Some a-hole competing websites will narc on you.

Diversify your link building methods.

Enough spam will get you de-indexed no matter who you are.

If you dont have a blog, set one up, it’s easy.

Publish fresh content several times a month.

PPC advertise your favorite webpages to those who will link to it.

Provide news updates about your company through press release services

If you run a finance website find “finance directories”

Implement CSS, Most blog and cms platforms come stock with css

Directories that matter, Yahoo.com, Business.com, DMOZ.org

Most fortune 500 companies do not use shared hosting

Inbound links and domain age grow trust with time, you can purchase aged domains.

Building Links that Engines see one day and cannot find the next raise spammer flags (dont spam forums)

How long would it take to build 100 natural links by asking for them?

How long would it take to build an awesome resource that attracts 100 links a year?

Affiliates need to work even harder to provide the best content; prove you belong on top, not the company your affiliated with.

The more you update a blog, the more readers and rss subscribers you will earn.

Phone numbers are good, fax numbers are good, chat now! options are good. Credibility and Trust!

It’s not only search engine programs that rank your website, an actual editor will come around sooner or later.

I’ve always been a commercial buff. As a marketer you kind of need to pay attention to the advertising strategies these large companies use. Not to go be a copycat but to get the wheels turning on developing a great advertising pitch. Popular commercials are often times funny or have a cool tune. An affiliate manager of mine sent me the video below of a comedian who shares his idea of what commercials should be like.

Invite Guest Writers, Become a Guest Writer

Guest writing is the process of providing a website with a freshly written article in exchange for a bio. or resource link to your own website. There are benefits to both posting guest written content on your own blog as well as guest writing for other blogs. I personally believe posting a useful article can be just as rank beneficial as building a link. I’ve found that many sites who offer guest writing positions rank very well. Google loves the fresh compelling content and will in most cases begin ranking your website as an authority as more writers contribute. As more people turn to opening their sites to guest writers, this will also open up more opportunities for the writers to build inbound one-way links.

Its not too hard to find blogs who need writers. Sometimes you can just ask random bloggers if they’d welcome a guest post. I have personally done this and found a decent number of accepting responses. If you do find the opportunity to write for a blog make sure you give them your best work. This is the least you can do for the free link. If you happen to welcome guest writers for your blog, feel free to add your site to our directory of content hungry blogs.

Persuasive Ads, Catchy Taglines

When investing in CPM advertising, clicks matter. CPM or cost per thousand views is a well known method of advertising used by companies online. Whether it’s CPM or CPC, choosing persuasive keywords or a catchy tag line is necessary for attracting a higher volume of visits.

According to a Jay Conrad’s, “Guerrilla Marketing” book, Psychologists at Yale University say that the most persuasive words in the English language are:

5 Money
6 Health
7 Discovery
8 Safety
9 Save
10 Easy
11 Proven
12 Guarantee

Then I went to do some research on some of the most popular taglines known throughout the last few decades. Here’s what I came across:

1 Don’t leave home without it.
2 Just do it.
3 Where’s the beef?
4 Think different.
5 Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
6 A diamond is forever.
7 Have it your way.
8 The ultimate driving machine.
9 Hey, Mikey…he likes it!
10 They’re gr-r-r-eat!
11 I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.
12 The quicker thicker picker-upper.
13 Share moments. Share life.

It threw me off to find that even though some words within the taglines came close, not one tagline contained any of the persuasive keyword listed above.

A challenge for the commentators:
List the 13 Companies that each tag line belongs to. Can you do it?

Great websites Market themselves

Take a look at your competition from the start. Could you easily sell your product or service if you were setup at a trade show in a booth beside the three companies listed as 1st 2nd and 3rd on Google. What makes you better than them? If you can’t answer this question then how about this, What can and will you do to become a better choice. The basic first steps begin at Price, Service, Selection and lets also include Web Design.

Think price, if your price is higher than the competition there must be a reason for it. Make sure this reason is spelled out for your visitor. If there is no reason for it, either create a reason or consider pushing your price down some.

Service can always be enhanced to insure the shopper will be pleased with their choice to buy from you. If its a product, confirm with them the order and let them know you’ll be shipping it promptly. Once it’s shipped let them know and also confirm receipt. If its a service go the extra mile. If your a ghost writer and someone has just ordered 50 custom articles, consider giving them another 5 articles on the house throughout the month.

Selection, whether it be products or services, the better selection you offer, the more repeat business you’ll receive. If I buy a car CD player from onlinecarstereo.com and later down the road I need an amplifier, I know I could probably get one from the same company because of their price, service and wide selection. On Ebay price and service are questionable at times, but a vast selection is always a sure thing. This will keep Ebay alive for many years to come.

Design, Is your website designed to offer the best user experience? How quickly can a user find the information they need. Is the information presented in a way that will better accommodate the user’s needs. I always believe the inner landing page should provide enough information for the user to be able to remain on the page for a minimum of 2 minutes. Lets use the car audio example once again. Most top results have it to where the product has some details, specifications, pictures. A new audio store can provide a strong competition and keep their visitors landed by providing a video explanation with install advice. This will also attract repeat visits.

If you can manage to find a way on top of the competition, word of mouth advertising will push you to the top all on it’s own. Never forget the power of a good product.

Do what you Love

During the day I normally work as a Tucson civil designer and then come home, take a break. Once the kids are in bed I begin my marketing strategies, seo research, content creation and other tasks for a few websites I run. Some nights run into late hours, this is sometimes what it takes to get ahead in life. I am also about a month away from earning my Insurance property and casualty liscense, another field I continue transitioning toward online and offline. Between the few projects I work on, I feel it is time to move from doing this in the evenings and weekends to working on these projects full-time. I have a wife and kids so I feel it’s important to completely share the time in the evening and weekends with them.

With this in mind I let my employer know I was going part-time starting asap. He was surprised to find this out. He’s the type of boss who expects you to only work for him because he fears that splitting one’s focus between jobs will effect performance. I’ve been doing this for years. Seeing that he was surprised and that I’ve survived two huge layoffs proves I do my job the way he expects me too. The question I have is, “what effects a person’s focus more?, a second job or figuring out a way to support their family’s financial needs”. A few years ago before I began earning a second income online, I remember when this was an issue. That is what brought me into the world of marketing in the first place. Last week I found an office space rental and set up to rent it for a full year. My temporary schedule will be set to where I will be working five hour mornings at the design office and the rest of the day in the new office until the end of the day. This will go on hopefully for no longer than six months until I feel comfortable to fully break off into my own full time business. If my current employer does decide to let me go, I have already planned for this by saving backup funds as well as building other part-time career connections. Just like chess, the better you plan your moves, the better the outcome.
